Tips on Budgeting Your Income & Expenses

Tips on Budgeting Your Income & Expenses
Are you one of the many that seem to have too much month left at the end of the money? While this may seem like a grammatically incorrect statement, unfortunately, it’s a situation too many of us are familiar with or a regular basis. If you’re in this group, you can benefit greatly from these simple tips on budgeting.
Two-Income Families
I remember growing up with my mother being a stay-at-home mom while my father worked outside of the home. This was a luxury that few couples can experience today. With economy as it’s been in recent years and the high cost of living, having two incomes in the family is almost a necessity. Not to mention – we seem to live better today and want more things than our parents and grandparents did and have to pay for them. One of the most important tips on budgeting I can give you is to live on only one income or only half of the second income in your family.
You’re probably thinking that it will be impossible. After all, the reason why you’re both working is because you need both incomes, right? The reason why so many couples are experiencing serious financial difficulties (besides the sagging economy) is because they’ve come to count on two incomes when determining what they could afford to buy. When one of them suddenly loses their job due to economy or downsizing, they’re strapped far beyond their means and in dire need of some good tips on budgeting.
If one of you loses your job, you’ll most likely collect unemployment compensation, which is approximately 50% of your gross income (income before taxes). While it may be difficult, you’ll probably survive financially because you have to. So, why not start surviving this way by choice rather than taking the chance that you may have to later?
Take half of your second income and put it in a “nest egg”. This nest egg can be a certificate of deposit (CD) or a savings account. Try this for six months and see how much money you’ll have at the end of six months.
Tips on budgeting, such as this one, can prove to be very helpful if the unfortunate happens and one of you does lose your job. With a small nest egg, you’ll be in a better position to survive until you can find another job. You may actually find you like your new lifestyle.
Cutting Unnecessary Expenses
Although few of us are willing to admit we waste money, we are a generation that spends far more than we need to and on many things we do not need. If you are currently using six credit cards, cut the number in half. You’ll be amazed at how much you’ll save in interest alone. This is probably not the first time you’ve heard about the pitfalls of credit when looking for tips on budgeting. It really makes a difference in your monthly expenses.
There are many tips on budgeting I can give you to help you have more money. However, they all revolve around the same principle. When determining what you can afford to buy, use half of your total income as a determining factor because one day you may only have that amount so better to prepare yourself now than later!

Very good advice. I think everyone would be surprised at how much less money they could live off of if they had to. I was laid off six months ago and I thought I would never be able to survive with half my income, but I can! Now I think about all that money that I was wasting when I was working.

The first tip is a great one, and it can be applied to just about everyone. You can almost always live off of less than you currently are, and it’s better to do it by choice than when faced with a dire situation.

I believe in living within your means principle. You don’t always have to spend thrift unless you have extra but there always have to be a time for budgeting and spending wisely. It pays off in the long run just like you’ve said.
Very good article with sound advice. I believe in living within your means. I also believe in expanding your means through creative investments. I believe we should all learn how to manage our finances through some basic accounting principles (http://ditchtheboss.blogspot.com/2010/06/basic-accounting-principles-start-to.html) and then expand your income sources through passive income.
Good advice, thank you.
