Tips of Budgeting That Really Work

Why is it that hearing the word budget invokes a sense of fear or boredom? Perhaps it’s because a budget will show us how much money we’re spending on unnecessary purchases. Or, perhaps by using a budget, we’re going to have to change our current lifestyle, and regardless of how much we say that change is good, we seldom like change when it involves cutting back on spending.

We’re always looking for tips on budgeting and on how to save money. Following those tips is often a different story because we often don’t believe they’ll make a difference. However, here are some great budgeting tips you won’t be sorry you followed.

Get rid of old junk. You’ll not only have more room in your home but you’ll be much more organized. By getting rid of it, I mean selling it. Whether you have a garage sale or sell it on eBay or one of the many other auction sites, sell those items that you no longer need and are just taking up space. This is one of the first tips on budgeting I ever followed when I decided I wanted to start having more extra money.  What may seem like junk to you can put money in your pocket.

In my research on saving money, another of the many tips on budgeting I received was to keep a daily journal of what I spent. I did it on a spreadsheet so I was able to quickly see what I spent for the past few months. Certain entries of “expenses” were put in different colors so I could easily spot them.

This was a real eye opener for me. When I started seeing far too many green entries for “gas for car”, I knew I was doing too much running around needlessly. Keeping a spreadsheet like this was similar to having graphs popping up on my screen telling me where all my money was going.

If you’re serious about finding effective tips on budgeting, the spread sheet or journal will tell you everything you need to know!

With the price of fuel today, you’re probably spending a lot more on gas than you need to be spending. That was definitely the case with me. Combine your trips to save money on gas, time and wear and tear on your car. Not to mention, the more times you’re on the road, the better the chances of you stopping to buy more things you don’t need.

Start a savings account with half of your “extra” money. You’ve probably heard this in the past any time you’ve tried to develop some tips on budgeting of your own. This is very important. Extra money is what’s left over after paying for necessities. You may think you don’t have any extra money, but most of us have some extra that’s being wasted. Even if the savings account only consists of $5 a week, it will add up over time. You never know when that rainy day might come and you’ll need that extra money!
