Things You Should Always buy Used
There are many things you should always buy used if you want to save your money. Sure we all love the excitement of going to a store and buying something brand new. It’s nice to tear off the packaging, read through the instruction manual and know that we are the first to use it. In some cases even the smell can be a bit of a rush or listening to the bindings crinkle into place for the first time has a certain allure. Is paying 3 or 4 times as much really worth it?
Here is a list of 4 things you should buy used to save thousands of dollars in your lifetime:
1. DVD’s or CD’s – Most movie rental locations offer a wide selection of previously viewed DVD’s. There are also plenty of stores that sell DVD’s and CD’s. The catch is there might be a small crack in the case or a slight scratch on the DVD itself. Buying brand new titles can be very expensive sometimes 2 or 3 times more.
2. BOOKS – Most people only read a book once. Books are also very expensive when you buy them brand new. There are plenty of used book stores that offer big titles at a fraction of the cost and sometimes they have new releases too. Â
3. KIDS TOYS – Any parent to be should know this secret. You will literally save hundreds if not thousands of dollars if you buy used kids toys. A friend of mine had a child a year and a half ago and their child only has used toys. A baby will play with anything. You could give them a brightly painted, nicely sanded piece of wood and the child will be amused for hours. Buying little kids toys used at a garage sale is well worth it. Just give it a nice cleaning and you’re little on will be happy as can be.
4. CARS – This may be a tough pill for some people to swallow but buying a new car is a waste of your money. Sure it smells nice and you can see your reflection off of every surface but that new vehicle will lose nearly 15% of its value in the first year. If you are worried about buying a lemon, do a history check on the vehicle. The internet is your friend when it comes to researching your vehicle purchase. Websites such as CarFax will give you that history for a small fee. Consumer Reports is another great resource. When you take the car out for a test drive bring it to your trusted mechanic and have him do a quick check. There are plenty of great deals on used cars out there. Buy used.
Let’s face it. In many cases buying something used does not make any difference. 9 times out of 10 a used DVD works just as well as a brand new one. A book reads exactly the same new or used. The only things we pay for when we buy a brand new product is the convenience and ease at which it is to find and the knowledge that you are the first to use it. If you do your research buying used will save you plenty of money down the road. We are all consumers and need to buy things but think about ways to better manage your money and consider these 4 things you should buy used.
