get in shapeYou may be feeling pretty proud of yourself right now.  You’ve made a killing in the stock market, saved ‘til you couldn’t save any more, and invested to high heaven.  Unfortunately, unless you also invest in your health, you won’t have a body to spend all the money you’ve accrued.  If you keep in mind that investing in your future by utilizing strategies to keep yourself healthy and fit right now, you’ll be able to strategize and come up with ways to start the process of healthy living, which is a wonderful end unto itself.  But if you feel like you want to save for the future by keeping yourself healthy today, here are a few tips to get you started.

Begin a routine to exercise your body and your mind.  This can be simple, like a morning jog or an afternoon run after work.  You might also up the ante a bit by moving outside your home (and possibly your comfort zone) by attending yoga, Pilates, or Tai chi classes or workshops.  Even simple gardening is an easy way to get out of your home or office on a regular basis and to let your mind unwind while performing a simple, repetitive task that actually yields healthy results.

Make sure that you’re eating right.  A healthy diet is one of the best ways to invest in your own health.  Avoid processed foods or eating out at fast food restaurants as much as possible.  Fruits and vegetables are packed with nutrients and antioxidants.  For the biggest health benefits, you can shop local at a farmer’s market or buy from your local organic grocer.  Or, better yet, hone those gardening skills!

Work on de-stressing your life.  You can practice breathing exercises or develop a non-work related hobby.  You can also get regular massages.  Make sure that you are spending at least one night a week out of your home.  Go to the theatre, the symphony, a dance concert, or a movie (but don’t be afraid to skimp on the popcorn, or skip it altogether!  If you must snack, sneak in a few carrot sticks!).

You can decrease your stress levels and increase your own personal health by maintaining a regular deep sleep schedule.  Avoid watching TV or looking at computer screens just before bed.  Instead, treat yourself to a nice warm bath three or four hours before you plan to go to nod off.  Reading is an easy way to lull the brain into inactivity just before you fall asleep.  You can also listen to soothing music.

You may feel the need to lose weight fast.  Be careful with the strategies that you use.  The best way to lose weight is to watch your diet and to build a regular exercise regime.  If, on the other hand, you are looking to build your muscle mass, you might consider using a protein powder.

Getting sick is expensive.  Ward off potential health problems by focusing on your number one investment:  you and your body.
