Six Exotic yet Affordable Ski Destinations
Posted by Elizabeth Retton
There can be nothing more inspiring, exciting, or romantic than the perfect chosen ski vacation. And there’s never any shortage of exotic destinations to find the perfect slope, coziest lodge, or sweetest hot chocolate. But the best destinations can also break the bank. In this article we’ll take a look at some exotic ski vacation destinations that won’t break the bank. And with the economy slowed, there’s never been a better time to dig up some incredible deals, in some of the most beautiful wintry destinations in the world. Many of these resorts can offer increased value with ski and stay packages, or by lowering their rates during the slower months. Shop early, and check back often, especially online, to take advantage of some of these incredible deals. But first, let’s look at where you might want to start in planning a ski vacation you’ll remember for the rest of your life.
Cooper, Colorado. The small town of Copper can often be passed by for sexier destinations up the road, but the challenging slopes will excite even the most die hard skier. At the end of your day, stay in one of the many condominium rentals, and save on eating out and hotel fees. And with their compact, walkable layout, you’ll save on shuttle fees.
Park City, Utah. Home of the glamorous Sundance Film Festival is a sleepy town at most other times of the year. And with three incredible sets of slopes all a short drive from each other (The Canyons, Deer Valley, and the Park City Mountain Resort), you’ll be able to experience a wide range of slopes with minimal travel time. Another city with tons of condo options, and the short airport round trip mean you’ll spend your dollars where they’ll be the most enjoyed.
Big Sky, Montana. Big Sky, though somewhat remote, offers up more than 5,500 acres of slopes for the die hard skiing aficionado. And since it’s a bit off the beaten path, you won’t find much competition, meaning smaller lines at the ski lifts. There’s many affordable lodges in the center of the quaint village, and many of them offer incredible ski and stay packages.
Tremblant, Quebec. Our first choice outside the United States will give you that exotic, European feel without the pricey airfare. It’s even a simple drive from much of the northeast. Beyond that, your dollar will go further in the Canadian economy, meaning more of everything for you on this particular trip. Check online, and you’ll fine gorgeous lodging options, many within ten minutes of the slopes.
Oukameden, Morocco. Africa doesn’t usually bring up visions of ski slopes, but Oukameden is currently making a name for itself. A mere forty-six miles from Marrakech, you’ll find it affordable and easy enough to get to, and the unique experience of warm weather skiing will be more than worth the extra airfare.
Banff, Alberta. Nestled within a national park in the middle of Canada’s Rocky Mountains, the epically gorgeous Banff always seems to be offering a sale. It may be frigid, but winter is their slow season, so button up and enjoy the slopes.
You may not be able to pony up for a luxurious week in St Anton Austria, but that doesn’t mean you won’t find unforgettable international options for exotic yet affordable skiing. Just do your homework, and shop through travel agents and online aggregators to dig up the best deal.
