2010 New Years smallThe 12 Debts of Christmas Part Six

With the twelfth debt of Christmas

my banker said to me:

Twelve months till next year,

Eleven percent interest,

Ten gifts to wrap,

Nine more gifts to buy,

Eight mouths to feed,

Seven unpaid bills,

Six collectors calling,

Five overdrawn credit cards,

Four spending sprees,

Three party’s left

Too much money spent

And a New Year that I hope is debt free!

How to Manage Money and The 12 Debts of Christmas

The big day is just around the corner. You have everything you think you need and then some. The lights are up, the stockings are hung, the egg nog is ready and so are you. You think your balances are in check and have kept to your budget. You realize that because you learned how to manage money during the holidays, you will be able to take care of it at any time of the year. Here are a couple more tips to ensure that you will be in the black when January arrives.

HOLIDAY DEBT TIP 11: Return What You Don’t Want or Need

So maybe you went a little overboard with you holiday shopping. You were distracted by the crowds of people and accidentally put a few too many items into your shopping cart. If you bought a pack of candles or napkins that you don’t need, return them. Do you have any unused wrapping paper, unopened holiday treats or leftover boxes of candy canes? Send them back. You can go through all kinds of items and get lots of money back that would otherwise go to waste.

Along the same line of thinking recycle things that you can’t return. Perhaps you shouldn’t go so far as to ‘re-gift’ because that’s just wrong according to the show Seinfeld, but things such as gift bags and bows for presents are a great start and will save you all kinds of money next year.

HOLIDAY DEBT TIP 12: Enjoy These Holidays

Christmas is just a few days away and if you have followed the previous 11 tips you should be able to sit back, relax, enjoy the quality time with your friends and family and not worry about debt. If you have taken control of your debt, this actually can be the best Christmas ever. Understanding that you know how to manage money and will be in good shape to start the new year will make this holiday season great. When you get that credit card bill in January not only will you be making progress on your debt but you will have also made Christmas special and taken care of everything and everyone around you. Congratulations! You deserve this holiday!
