How to Make Your Leisure Time Work for You
Making the most of your Leisure Time
Posted by, Money Tips Staff
For many people, leisure time has become a bit of a luxury. We work long hours, and the last thing we want to do when we get home from work is start working again. But some people have the drive to stay productive, to keep making money in their off time. And there’s nothing wrong with that, as long as you’re not stressing yourself out too much. There are many ways to use your free time to enjoy activities that can earn some additional income for your savings account. And that extra income can help make your next vacation that much better, or simply help alleviate the stress of those bills stacking up on your dresser. So, how can you make your leisure time work for you?
Put Your Hobby to Work
If you enjoy writing, you can spend some of your leisure time writing articles that you can sell to websites for a bit of extra cash. This might not work as well if you have clients, who will probably prefer that you work to meet their deadlines. However, there are sites that offer on-demand payments for content writing while allowing you to enjoy a flexible schedule.
For example, both Demand Studios and Textbroker allow writers to write as much and as often as they’d like, but do require writers to apply before submitting their first articles. Demand Studios also accepts other positions like editors, title checkers and videographers. A skilled writer should be able to write two of their 400 word articles an hour, at $15.00 each. The topics are also easy enough to tackle while you watch television or listen to music.
If you enjoy playing skill based games, you might consider trying out some online gambling sites. Most sites offer competitive sign up bonuses that allow you to receive free money for making a deposit (sometimes as much as 200%). This means that a small deposit of $20.00 could give you $60.00 in money to play. Just like with content writing, however, there are scams out there – so it’s in your best interest to learn how to avoid online gambling scams before you sign up at a site. As long as you treat such activities with caution and treat the money as a recreational expense (not an investment) you’ll have more of an opportunity to make some extra cash playing at gambling sites than turning on the XBox.
Get Some Exercise
It can be tough to find time to exercise during the day. Work from home freelancers and office workers are especially prone to expanding waist lines with so much time spent sitting at a desk. While there is some debate as to how much exercise you should be getting every day, most experts agree that 150 minutes of moderate activity is the goal – or about 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week. You can break these sessions into smaller ten minute sessions during the day, instead of five 30 minute sessions. Some activities that qualify as moderate exercise include:
- Mowing the lawn
- Cooking a meal
- Cleaning
- Walking the dog
- Shoveling snow
- Raking leaves
- Gardening
- Climbing stairs
Exercise can help you focus on activities that make you money, and can potentially save you money in the long run in costly medical bills. Using myself as an example, I like to break up writing during the day with ten minute periods of cleaning or walking to help keep focused when I am writing, and break up an otherwise monotonous day of work.
Do Some Networking
Nothing is more important in business than networking and building relationships – but it doesn’t have to be a grind. While you relax in front of the television after a long day of work, grab your laptop and do some networking. This can be as easy as:
- Reading some blog posts written by people in your industry and leaving comments.
- Updating your social media profiles by adding connections.
- Making a few phone calls or sending emails (as long as it’s not too late) to talk with clients and business partners.
- Reading news about your industry and save good articles for future reference.
- Working on your email list.
Keeping or building new business relationships gives you the power to accomplish much more during your regular work hours. Additionally, new clients and business people like to see that the people they’re working with have an active presence in their industries, as this can indicate that people enjoy working with you and are happy with the work that you do.
Update Your Budget
Of course, you can always spend some of your free time completing the daily tasks that are vital to your success, but don’t technically make you that much money. You can update your monthly budget, or log your day’s expenses and revenue in Quicken. There are countless ways to balance your budget without making noticeable sacrifices in your day to day life, and you can use your leisure time to plan strategies to implement these techniques in your lifestyle.
Although it can be tempting to spend all of your time working, remember that it’s just as important to take some time just for yourself and not worry about finances for a few hours – especially if you have a family. So, while spending your leisure time on your finances will help you remain successful, taking some time off to reduce stress and enjoy life is just as important, and can help you stay productive in the long run.
