During December of last year alone, claims on house insurance totaled around £900 million after the barrage of snow and ice damage that hit UK homes, according to Think Money. Pay-outs accounted for burst pipes, ice damage to roofs and gutters, as well as heavy damage caused by melted snow. This represented a major increase on last year’s figures, as well as a reminder of the changing climate in the UK.

Sadly, many households not choosing to renew home cover would have had a nasty shock when the value of the damage was conveyed to them. Official figures discussed by the website went on to claim that nearly a third of households have no building or contents cover. This isn’t the best situation, given that the average winter damage claim is around £2,200.

Naturally, other factors relating to weather have been known to cause major home insurance claims. A number of flash-floods have been recorded in low-lying areas of the UK, such as York, Carlisle and Worcester, while intense storms can bring hail, lightning and heavy rain that can also hit a homeowner’s wallet hard. While assessing the risks of a property is always important in such areas, having home insurance should be seen as necessary, particularly as our climate evolves into a much more unpredictable beast.
